Cathy Rexford, 29, is Inupiaq, French-German, English and Dutch. Cathy’s family comes from Kaktovik, Alaska and Dallas, Texas and she currently lives in Anchorage.
Cathy is a writer, an actor, a lover/junkie/producer of films. She has worked extensively in Native education and language efforts as well as contemporary Native theater and film projects. Most recently, she has worked with Naninaaq Productions on a series of historical documentaries about the Inupiaq people. In addition, she works with Lotus Productions creating an international theatre exchange between Indigenous communities in New Zealand and Alaska.
Cathy's writing has been published in national and international literary journals, and she is currently writing a two-volume children's novel, A Crane Story, based on Inupiaq culture. Part One of this project will be out in the Fall of 2008. Cathy's first book of poetry, Effigies, a collection of four Indigenous women poets, is also being published this year by Salt Publications. In addition, The Namesake, an Inupiaq tragedy written for the stage, is going through the final revisions for it's debut in Anchorage.
Cathy is also the Alaska Director of Native Movement where she works with Indigenous people to build healthy social, spiritual, and cultural communities. As owner of Kind of Blue Productions, Cathy collaborates and finds inspiration nationally and internationally with other artists and writers.
